Rescue Me ID: 15-05-10-00151Clyde (male)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

'Easiest foster we've ever had,' said his temp foster back in Tennessee. We believe it. Clyde was hit by a car and left by the side of the road. A good sam got him to a shelter and the rest is history. Clyde made the trip from warm and sunny Tennessee to cold (for April) blustery Maryland and uttered not one word of complaint. A perfect gentleman in the car and a total love bug once home. Clyde is not quite ready for adoption. He will continue to recuperate from his accident and subsequent surgery at the home of his foster family. We would not be the least bit surprised if his foster mom does not succumb to his sweet southern charm.

Here are the observations of a volunteer who took Scarlett's picture. She was very sweet and curious. She watched her surroundings constantly. She loved to be petted, but she was more interested in whatever was going on outside.

Rescue Me ID: 15-05-10-00146Lilly (female)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Lilly looks especially comfy in this photo, you can bet it is because she is grateful for a warm dry bed after running stray for a year and a half! She is a sweet adult girl, a little scared as you may imagine after living on her own so long, but re-acclimating quickly to life as a house pet. Concerned volunteers were able to trap her after a long hard effort, once neighbors alerted animal control to sightings. This girl has been through an awful ordeal. She was adopted from the shelter in fall of 2013. She escaped from the family in a week and had been running loose ever since. At some point, she was shot and has a BB lodged near her ... (Read More)ribs. She was probably hit by a car and has an awful leg injury that has started to heal on it's own. Look at the horrible xray of her leg. She also has some broken ribs that have started to heal. Naturally, she's Heartworm positive and has Lyme's disease. The family who originally adopted her was contacted, and they said they wanted her back. But in 5 days, they never showed up at the shelter to get her. Another slap in the face for this poor girl. It will be a while before she's ready for her forever home, but we'll keep you posted on her progress. (Less)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

ayla is a settled girl who needs a place to call home. She's only been with us a short time, but so far has not had any issues with the persnickety resident dogs and she does love a good nap. We can't imagine that she wouldn't love to watch your favorite TV shows with you as you pass the Doritos her way. We haven't heard her bark yet, but she's still trying to figure out this whole sleeping in the house thing and doesn't want to blow what she sees as a great gig. So far, she's mum - although she does communicate with little grunts and whines if she thinks you could have spent another 30 seconds scratching her ears. Layla's easy, laid back ... (Read More)personality makes her perfect for the first time foster or adopter, HOWEVER, she will need to be either exclusively leash walked or never (EVER) allowed unsupervised in the yard. She likes to roam and can and will dig herself out from under the securest of fences. If you can foster (or adopt!) this nice girl, please contact icanhelp@beaglemaryland.org. Layla will be waiting. Beagle Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive

Josie is a rescue from SC. She's housebroken, doesn't chew anymore, loves laying on you or beside you. Her ears are cute. She kind of has a face like a dachshund but a nose like a beagle so I'm not sure. She doesn't run car. My 3 yo does any thing to her. She's got along with my rescues. She does require a fenced in yard. I run a small private rescue so I do adopt out with contract. Fee is to help expenses and towards other rescues.

Rescue Me ID: 15-03-24-00200Rudy Hughes (male)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

We only know a little bit about Rudy so far. He is super affectionate and pleasingly plump. He's very soft and huggable. And Rudy seems to walk very nicely on the leash. He's rather food-aggressive and must be kept separate from other dogs during meals and treats. And on his first and only ride so far, he got carsick. We don't know if this is a one-time problem - all the shelter stress, fear of the unknown, etc. We'll let you know more as soon as we learn it.

Rescue Me ID: 15-03-24-00189Ginger Henderson (female)

Beagle    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

She may have been abused by her previous owners and it has taken the past three months to get her to really break out of her shell. I believe she was an outdoor dog, most likely a discarded hunting dog. She still occasionally flinches when you raise your hand to pet her - but not every time anymore. She loves our other rescue beagle, Wheeler and he has really helped put her at ease, so a family with another dog would be a great option for her. She loves to sit on the sofa with us. She is still figuring out toys - she is scared if you throw anything for her and squeaky toys actually startle her. Poor sweet girl. That being said, everything is ... (Read More)a toy at this age! She will get into the trash! She is also great with our cats - we have four. Even the largest cat who gives her the Jedi mind trick stare down in an attempt to antagonize her. She has never been aggressive with him. Ginger is also great with my kids, two boys ages ten and fourteen. She has tons of energy and is really sweet. Once she became comfortable with us, the puppy came out and she loves to get into everything! Not at all aggressive. She is dying to snuggle but isn't completely there yet. She loves to sleep in bed with me and will snuggle up on her own terms. She doesn't give kisses and isn't crazy about receiving them yet but she loves to get a good rub down and belly rub for as long as you're willing to give. :) Ginger is not quite housebroken yet - but we're close. The problem is pooping in the house after a long walk or run. She does get very excited when she catches a scent. Our house backs to woods and a walking path cuts through. She has lots of doggies and people to bark at all day long! Along with the help of my dog, she has tried digging into my neighbor's yard. She has escaped her collar a few times so I use a harness for walks. She needs lots of TLC and patience and will be an amazing addition to someone's family. We have really grown attached to Ginger and it will be a bittersweet day to see her go on to another good forever family, but I am so very proud of her progress. (Less)

Beagle    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Luna is a pretty little senior girl, all dressed up in different shades of white and brown. She's friendly with people and dogs and ignores cats. We haven't seen her with small children, but doubt that there would be any problems. She's working on basic obedience, housebreaking and crate training. She's just now learning basic cues like sit, but she already walks nicely on leash. (She does want to poke along very slowly and sniff at everything---just like you'd expect a senior beagle to do.) Luna can last about 5 hours in crate with no accidents, but she's not happy about it. She will bark and whine until you leave. Other than that, she's ... (Read More)rather quiet. She isn't bothered by loud noises and is generally a sweet and inquisitive little girl. She seems in good health, but could use joint supplements for her hips. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-02-20-00406Pearl (female)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Pearl is a tri-colored, short-legged, somewhat pudgy girl. The tip of her tail was docked at some time by a previous owner, so her white marking is gone. It seems that some hunters do this either to tell their dogs apart. It gives her an odd look. Pearl is very submissive around other dogs, cats, people, and with her food. She's not a barker. She tolerates a crate but doesn't really like it. Pearl is house-trained, but of course, if you ignore her when she sits by the door, you'll pay for your inattention. Pearl absolutely adores going for a walk, but doesn't really care to turn around and go home. We walk in a circular pattern and that ... (Read More)makes her a happy walker. When she's not walking or eating, she's on the couch. The couch is the next best thing to walking. From her figure you can tell she also adores food and treats. We are trying to cut back and trim her down a little. Pearl comes from a hoarding situation. We know little about her life prior to the hoarder, but it must not have been good as she is still skittish around us. She sometimes cringes when I reach to pet her and loud voices make her look for cover. It seems she was knocked around a bit. Even though she would probably be great around kids, she might be a little overwhelmed at this stage. She would be great for a retired couple and would do well with another low-key dog buddy for confidence. Pearl is now ready to find her forever home. She has had a dental cleaning, all shots, heart-worm treatment, but no spaying. The hoarder who had her said she never came into heat while he had her and it must be true because she hasn't come into heat in the last seven months in rescue. The vet is puzzled because he can't find a spay scar but the exploratory would be too extensive and put her through unnecessary pain and stress. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-02-20-00393T.J. (male)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

T.J. is a young, healthy, and sweet boy. His age was estimated to be three years old, but he is still very much a puppy. He is quite playful, very energetic, and knows no boundaries. So, he is the typical toddler. T.J. came from a hoarding situation in West Virginia and requires the presence of another dog for comfort, preferably a young, energetic, and playful friend with whom to pass the time. When he settles down to rest, he will climb on an occupied pillow and curl up next to the resident dog as if he loves the contact for security. T.J. does not have an aggressive bone in his body, but prefers not to share his food or treats. He takes ... (Read More)his treats and races to the corner to consume the tasty morsel. We feed him in a crate in the kitchen since he thinks that his foster siblings might want to share their meals with him. He backs off when they give a little warning growl and moves to the next bowl to see if there might be something for him. T.J. is a smart little guy. He learned his name quickly and is doing very well in the house-training department. He occasionally chews on inappropriate items, but more often than not he will just pick up a nylabone chew toy for entertainment. He walks pretty well on a leash as long as we are headed in the direction he wants to go. However, he does not like it when he is headed in one direction and gets stopped by the leash. He rears up and bites his harness/leash, which is the response of a petulant child. He is easily persuaded to get back to the activity at hand. T.J. has not shown a propensity to dig in the yard or garden, but has not been unsupervised in our yard. The notes that accompanied T.J. to our home stated that he climbed fences, and I have not been inclined to challenge him on this with only a four foot chain link fence around my yard. Additionally, I have seen him bound up to the top of a 4.5 foot garden wall while standing still at the base. T.J. needs a tall (six-foot) wood fence to safely contain him or must go to a home where he is constantly leash-walked. T.J. is not a vocal guy and does not bark indoors or at the neighbors or animals when outside. The verdict is still out on this trait though because the weather has been so cold since he came to my house that he just wants to get back inside. He came from a home without heat or electricity, and I think he has spent enough freezing dark nights for one short life. When we are potty training, his treat for going to the bathroom outside is to race back in to the heated kitchen. T.J. is a lover! He will sit on my husband's lap for hours if given the chance. Even if he cannot get all the way up in your lap, he wants to be near and receive your attention. When he has the opportunity to stand up for a good belly rub, he goes for it. If you have a secure home with a playful pup, you may just want to come by and meet the handsome T.J. He is sure to steal your heart. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-02-20-00384Roger (male)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Roger is a handsome thirty pound beagle with a sleek, muscular build. He is looking for a special foster home where he can learn that consistent behavior is required. Overall, he is a friendly, likable, and well-behaved-dog, but because he has shown aggression on a handful of occasions, he is not a candidate for many of our foster homes. Unlike most beagles, Roger can be selective about his company, and has started a fight with a smaller dog in his first foster home. On walks, he happily interacts with some dogs and is aggressive toward others. He has also growled at small children and at an adult guest in his foster home. Again, he has ... (Read More)been very friendly with most adults and some children. We know little about his past, other than he came from a Kentucky shelter where the volunteers thought he was a very nice dog. Since arriving in Maryland, he has spent time in four homes and has been in boarding. It has been a turbulent few months for him, which may help explain his troubles. Because Roger's behavior will need to be addressed before he is adopted, he needs a committed, experienced foster who will agree to either consult with a behaviorist or enroll him in training courses. BRSM will pay for and work with the foster to identify an appropriate behavioral program. Roger would be delighted to be an only dog, or to live with one other friendly dog where all of the interactions are supervised. We would love to help Roger find an appropriate living situation. Rescue Me ID: 15-02-03-00224Brownie ($500 reward) (female)

Beagle    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Brownie is a female 11 year old 13 inch tricolor beagle weighing 28 lbs. She's a real sweetheart who loves to play and run. Despite her age, she is still really spunky and is in good health. I've had her for 11 years and it breaks my heart to let her go but she needs a better quality of life than hanging out in her kennel for the majority of the day. Personality: She's a quirky stubborn girl but loves to curl up on the couch and bury herself in blankets. She likes to be warm; she'll bask in the sun, make her own igloo of blankets in her kennel, and sleep under the covers of your bed. In the summer, her favorite place is sitting on ... (Read More)top of the AC vents in the house so she can cool down. She loves to run laps in the house when new people visit or when we get home for the day. She'll sit and pounce for treats and like any beagle, she loves food. We have kept her at a good weight and don't give her too many treats, though she would love to have them. We don't like to leave water out for her all the time and only give it to her a little bit at a time because she has no will power and will drink a gallon of water if you put it in front of her. She's always been that way%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD| she likes to eat ice cubes which is a good way for her to not binge on water but still get hydrated. She's friendly with other dogs and loves to run around and play, but will frequently forget her size. She'll defend herself if bigger dogs get too aggressive and it scares the hell out of me that she'll get hurt. She's good with people and likes to lick them upon initial meeting. She doesn't have a lot of experience being around kids but also likes to lick their faces and be petted. Brownie is a slightly vocal girl%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD| not full howling all the time like beagles do but will howl when she's excited to see you but the noise will die down quickly. She also makes an squeaking noise when she's excited. She does have a good sense of danger if something is amiss and will bark when feeling threatened. She handles vet appointments well. She has no hunting experience. She loves to go on walks and walks well on the leash; we've been using a gentle leader nose harness on her to keep her from pulling. Health: She receives the regular regimen of annual shots and is up to date on all. She is prone to ear infections which tend to clear up quickly with medicated sprays from the vet when needed. She gets her ears cleaned out weekly with medicated pads and an ear rinse as well. Her hearing is starting to go, but she still responds when you talk directly to her. She has a few fatty cysts that get checked during her annual vet appointments; they are benign and don't cause her any trouble. On occasion, she will pull a muscle in her leg causing her to limp around for a day or two. She tries to milk it and get the sympathy vote%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD|she's no fool. She'll quickly recover at dinner time when the food comes out. First time it happened I took her to the vet thinking something was really wrong%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD| she of course was fine as soon as we got there. Now I just give her a couple of days to recover. She does like to eat things off the street and will get sick%BD%BD%BD'%BD%BD%BD| vomiting or poop in her kennel. Being that she is 11 years old (DOB 10/02/2003), she has slowed down and can't jump up on the couch like she used to. She loves to run around but just needs to rest more afterwards. She was always really active and doesn't look her age. She's fine going up and down the stairs at our house. Brownie has a lot of personality and is a really smart girl. I just want her to have room to run and get the attention and love she deserves. She can be stubborn and has selective hearing when she doesn't want to do what she's told but ultimately she knows the routine at home. She can be independent and is fine being by herself though she loves the company of others. We are offering a $500 reward to someone who is willing to rescue our Beagle... we cant imagine going down the other possible routes... (Less)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Gus is a sweet boy whose demeanor is one of a downtrodden old man to whom life hasn't been very kind. He was pulled from the shelter and spent a couple of weeks boarding at the vet's office before his foster family picked him up. He stood to meet them with his tail tucked and head down. It was clear as he was led out the door (with much encouragement) that he had no idea what the humans were going to do to him this time. Within hours, in the calm, quiet, and loving environment of a safe home, he began to come out of his shell. He was relieved and comforted by the presence of two other dogs of similar age, and although at first wary of the ... (Read More)humans, his trust was soon purchased with a taste of blueberry pancake. It will still take Gus a few weeks to settle in to a new, kinder routine, but we know already that he will make someone a wonderful companion. Gus has a beautiful and unusual dark chocolate coat. He's a bit rotund at the moment, but a steady diet of nutritious meals and daily walks should soon see him in better shape. Although he looks sad in his photos, new found security will quickly have him looking like the handsome, lovable guy he was born to be. (Less)

Beanie, a.k.a., Queen Baltimore, and sometimes affectionately called Jelly Bean by her foster mom, is a beautiful, sweet, playful, gentle, goofy girl who has made amazing progress since her rescue in June. We don't know much about her past, but in her foster home, Beanie spent much of the first two months hunkered down in what her foster mom dubbed 'the cave' - a crate at the end of a short hallway. Beanie immediately claimed the cave as her safe place, and she rarely left without being carried or persuaded with super tasty treats. Beanie has adjusted nicely to the daily routine, but still occasionally appreciates the serenity of her cave ... (Read More)when the household is bustling. We were told that Beanie's former owner kept her penned up outside, so the inside of a home is new to her, and she can be startled by new things. In fact, she'd prefer that her foster mom not clutter the floor with anything that doesn't normally belong there - grocery bags, step stools, laundry baskets, etc. She loves sniffing around outdoors in the fenced yard, playing with the resident beagles, raiding the recycle bin, and the tasty treats that her mom doles out from the vegetable garden, especially fresh green beans! Beanie craves affection and quickly warms up to strangers, especially if they sit on the floor and pet her a lot. In a home with a couple of people to dote on her, Beanie will surely blossom into a bigger love bug than she already is. As is the case with shy dogs, Beanie should be supervised while outside, especially in a new environment and even in a securely fenced yard. Beanie's leash training is going better than expected, especially when accompanied by another dog. She's made excellent progress on house-training and she's learning some basic commands (e.g., sit, come, crate). All are works in progress, plus she's a gem in the crate. Beanie is vocal only when sights and sounds startle her while outdoors. Beanie's ideal home would include a patient adult or two (she is untested with children) committed to helping her through a short-term withdrawal in a new environment, continued leash and obedience training, lots of love and affection, another confident, friendly, and playful dog, a securely fenced yard, and a crate. When playing in her foster home, Beanie initiates play and unaggressively holds her own with one of the resident dogs who sometimes turns into a jerk during doggie games! She loves to run zoomies in the yard, and when she's really excited for meals, she'll bounce around and gleefully jump into and out of her crate. (Less)

Roxy's foster mom just loves this little girl! Roxy loves to snuggle right next to her foster mom, but she's also happy curled up on the couch by herself or with any of the other dogs. Don't think she's a slug though as Roxy loves her walks. When her red harness is pulled out, her little butt just starts wiggling. She walks well with other dogs, but does love to stop and pee on just about every other blade of grass! Her nose is always twitching as she picks up on the latest ... (Read More)smells. If a squirrel runs by, she will perk up and be at attention. Roxy enjoys sitting out on the upper deck in the sun. She also has a favorite spot in the yard where she sits next to a tall tree, pointing her face to the sun. Roxy will bark if another dog or neighborhood kid goes running by the yard, though it's nothing excessive. She gets along with the other dogs, both big and small. Roxy is a good eater and jumps right in the crate when it's time for breakfast and dinner. She does her business outside, but does not like rainy days. Unlike the other dogs, she is not an early riser and prefers to sleep in until I nudge her awake. She has been sleeping up on the bed of late. Roxy does not like car rides and does get mildly sick. If we did not already have four dogs, we would adopt her, but I want to keep fostering and could not do so if we had five dogs. Whoever takes Roxy will have a wonderful companion. Peanut has so much to offer the humans who open their hearts and home to her. She gained lots of valuable experience at navigating indoor living. Peanut and her current ... (Read More)human are going to be very sad when they have to part, and Peanut would like someone who is extra-understanding while she adjusts to life without her mom. Peanut loves to play with people or other dogs. She enjoys walks and outdoor activities in general. If you throw a stick, she loves to show you how fast she can run. She loves to snuggle in bed and on the sofa and likes to lay with her head on your chest. He can shrink down and get through some pretty small spaces. Willis is a 'dog's dog' and will be placed only in a home with other dogs. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 12-07-11-00280Yankee (male)

Beagle Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

Yankee is a very active playful fellow. He loves both people and dogs, and interacts well with both. Although he was born to a beagle mix mother in our rescue (Wrigley), his dad was obviously a black Labrador. He is very handsome with a soft, sleek black coat highlighted by white patches on his chest, toes and lips. He is energetic as only young dogs can be, and plays well with his foster brothers. He enjoys running around the backyard and then settling on his pillow in his foster's bedroom for the night. Yankee has great manners, is crate trained, walks well on a leash, sits on command and comes when called. He is patient at meal time and ... (Read More)waits his turn when treats are being handed out. In general he is a well behaved dog with manners. He was raised in a loving home, but was returned to our rescue for medical reasons. Yankee does have a chronic condition that requires continued care, and for that reason Yankee is eligible for Beagle Maryland's Friends of Winston Program. In general Yankee does not act like he is feeling badly. He races out the back door, talks to the dogs a couple of yards over, tells us when folks are passing the house with or without dogs, and plays wholeheartedly with his brothers. He is a sweet and loving guy that just needs a little extra helping hand to live a comfortable and active lifestyle as your best friend. Adoptive Status: Neutered, UTD on shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Dream Home Minimum Requirements: Obviously, Yankee needs someone who will be attentive to his medical needs throughout the rest of his life. Owner Aptitude Level: Nurturing, patient beginner (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 12-07-11-00230Mrs. Beasley (female)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Mrs. Beasley is a lady! She's one that would sip tea with her pinky in the air. Mrs. Beasley was simply not brought up to roughhouse or participate in the juvenile shenanigans of those other hooligans in her foster home. In fact, she is aghast at the very idea. Really. Mrs. Beasley would probably be most comfortable in a home where the children and adults are calm and gentle, as she is calm and gentle herself. She is a very, very nice girl.

Beagle Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This beautiful little girl is an absolute sweetheart. Lively, but gentle and curious, she is happy to be out of that terrifying shelter and into the relative calm of a foster home. She loves to get out in the yard where the smells are so enticing. Bianca is very friendly. Her tail goes a mile a minute when she's shown some friendly attention. Might you be able to offer her a forever home?

PIease Read Before Adopting a Beagle in Maryland
Beagle Dogs can make good pets in Maryland if they match your IifestyIe. Beagles are small, energetic hounds with sweet, happy dispositions. Beagles make wonderful family pets. Beagles need to be with people and do not like to be left alone; it is a good idea to have more than one dog if you will be away often. Beagles are great with children but do not do well with cats and other household animals unless they are around them from the time they are puppies. A Beagle needs a decent sized yard to play in and needs lots of exercise. Beagles may wander off easily if not kept on a leash.
