Rescue Me ID: 15-01-16-00387Katie (female)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sweet Katie is very tiny and VERY cute! She's a bit 'shy' (a code word in the rescue world for one who is either scared or timid). When Katie got off the transport, she ran with the rest of the pack in the back yard, happy to be out of a crate and have her feet on the ground. But when her new foster family came to get her, it was a little challenging to catch her. She came for a treat, though, so we think that after being in foster care for a while, Katie will learn that humans can be kind (and really convenient to have around at meal times). UPDATE FROM KATIE'S FOSTER MOM AFTER ONLY 24 HOURS IN RESCUE: Oh my goodness, Katie is a little ... (Read More)doll baby! She is very skittish but I can already tell that she's warming up. Today when I came home from the grocery store, she was waiting at the gate, tail wagging. She doesn't shy away when I pet her now. She still prefers to camp out on the top step and hasn't taken to the dog bed yet, but she did great sleeping through the night. She's had no accidents. I take her out about every three hours. She loves to be outside and never wants to come in. I gave her a bath yesterday and she could probably use another one as she has a lot of shelter dirt to wash off! She's very low maintenance. If I had not sworn to my husband that I would not keep a third dog it would be very tempting because she's very easy-going. She's not high energy and I think would do well in a more quiet home where there wasn't a lot of noise and chaos. I think with a little time, she'll definitely be one snuggling next to you on the couch while you watch TV! She's very easy on the leash and doesn't pull like a typical beagle. But she is a little bit of an escape artist, as she found a small hole where the ground was uneven and got under the fence, so we had to put some reinforcements on the hole to keep her in. I was standing right there and in two seconds she had slithered like a snake through the hole. I didn't even think she would be able to fit through it! Whoever gets her needs to be aware of that. She's a very gentle, sweet soul. I was able to reach down and put more food in her bowl while she was eating and she had no problem with my hands being near her food. Not a growl, bark or any sign of aggression, how did I get so lucky? *Note: As I was typing this email Katie came into the room and put her paws up on the chair I was sitting in and with a little encouragement she jumped up and sat next to me. Oh what a sweet baby she is! This report made our hearts sing! That said, Katie's forever home will need a securely-fenced yard that is routinely patrolled for escape possibilities. It's amazing how they appear where none existed yesterday! She is good on the leash if she is accompanied by another dog, but we found out that being an only dog is not the best situation for her. She should have a canine companion for living and walking. We're so glad this little one made it to rescue! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-12-26-00272Basil (male)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Basil is a very sweet, but timid boy. Whatever his former life held, it couldn't have been pleasant. Pulled from the shelter in mid-December, Basil had been waiting for his foster in a crate at the vet's office. When our volunteer came to shoot his picture, he was sweet and compliant, making him a dream to photograph, but he lacked the enthusiasm and curiosity of a more confident dog. When his photo shoot was over and we were waiting for him to be returned to his crate, he stood quietly and gratefully accepted the cuddles and affection offered to him, but was too shy to instigate it. Basil is a VERY nice boy. His future home should not ... (Read More)expect a boisterous 'instant' pet. Time, patience, and steady, gentle encouragement will be the key to unlocking this boy's inner beagle. It's in there and will come out when his new family has earned his trust. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-12-26-00269Gus (male)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Gus is a sweet boy whose demeanor is one of a downtrodden old man to whom life hasn't been very kind. He was pulled from the shelter and spent a couple of weeks boarding at the vet's office before his foster family picked him up. He stood to meet them with his tail tucked and head down. It was clear as he was led out the door (with much encouragement) that he had no idea what the humans were going to do to him this time. Within hours, in the calm, quiet, and loving environment of a safe home, he began to come out of his shell. He was relieved and comforted by the presence of two other dogs of similar age, and although at first wary of the ... (Read More)humans, his trust was soon purchased with a taste of blueberry pancake. It will still take Gus a few weeks to settle in to a new, kinder routine, but we know already that he will make someone a wonderful companion. Gus has a beautiful and unusual dark chocolate coat. He's a bit rotund at the moment, but a steady diet of nutritious meals and daily walks should soon see him in better shape. Although he looks sad in his photos, new found security will quickly have him looking like the handsome, lovable guy he was born to be. (Less)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Howie is a handsome and gentle boy. He stayed at my house for two weeks and he was a doll, very gentle and timid. He would be happy just chilling out with his family in front of the TV, but he also enjoyed chasing around the yard with his energetic foster sister. He tried to mark in the house on his first day, but I caught him and corrected him, and he hadn't tried since.

Rescue Me ID: 14-11-21-00459Brinlee (female)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Isn't Brinlee beautiful? She's just as sweet as she is pretty. She's only recently in rescue and so we only have the observations of her chauffeur from Hagerstown to Towson (where her foster dad picked her up), but Brinlee was a perfectly behaved angel. She came off the 14 hour transport very composed. She was anxious to stretch her legs - and after about an hour or so of running in the yard, sniffing, and once jumping so high that her head was even with the 6' fence, she settled into a bed in the house and napped. She has a calm temperament, gets on well with the other dogs, and never looked back when her foster dad came for her. We look ... (Read More)forward to an update from her foster folks soon. (Brinlee hit it big as far as foster folks go - experienced and loving, we know that by the time she is adopted, she'll be well socialized and have decent manners.) (Less)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Lacee loved the camera and wasn't at all shy about posing! She packed a lot into her photo session . . . a little love and affection for the BRSM volunteer, some play time, and a good sniff of her surroundings. As soon as she got outside, she yipped happily a few times and engaged in some playful hi-jinx with the toys. She seems like she'd do well in a home with some kids or another dog. Lacee is still boarding at the vet, so she'd sure love for a foster or adopter to come take her home!

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Enid is just a lovely dog! Friendly and outgoing, she was happy for a little outdoor time from her boarding crate at the vet. Definitely a beagle, she was nose-to-the-ground for a bit, but was equally as happy to spend a little time with the volunteer photographing her. Since we haven't gotten to spend much time with her, we don't know much more, but she seems like an easy-going gal who would fit into just about any household. Please consider fostering or adopting Enid. You won't regret it!

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Nimue (pronounced Nim-oo-way, one of the Ladies of the Lake from Arthurian legend) is new to our rescue. As you can see from the sore spot on her nose, she is unhappy being boarded in a small cage at the vet. As soon as she got outside, she let out a couple of longing howls and then had a good time sniffing around. She was very affectionate and even planted a couple of kisses on the volunteer's chin! Nimue would likely do well in a home where someone will spend lots of time doting on her and give her a comfy spot on the sofa. She promises she won't take up much room. Rescue Me ID: 14-11-07-00524Bert (male)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bert is back. His family can no longer care for him do to a health problem that causes his mom to be out of town for long periods of time. He's such a nice boy and would really get along great with a family who has time to include him in their adventures and perhaps another friendly dog. Here is his original write-up: Bert was a stray in Baltimore when he was picked up by (of all things) a pitbull rescue. Somebody knew somebody who knew somebody else, and low and behold, Bert became part of the BRSM family. By all accounts, Bert is a GREAT dog! He's young, playful, energetic, and loving. He gets on well with the other dogs in his foster ... (Read More)home and he fancies himself a lap dog, so he is a cuddly, affectionate guy as well. We think he'd like a kid or two who would play with him. Bert could use a little fine tuning - he needs work on leash training, but once settled with a loving and attentive family and once he knows what is expected of him, he will be a loyal and indispensable family member. Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Beanie, a.k.a., Queen Baltimore, and sometimes affectionately called Jelly Bean by her foster mom, is a beautiful, sweet, playful, gentle, goofy girl who has made amazing progress since her rescue in June. We don't know much about her past, but in her foster home, Beanie spent much of the first two months hunkered down in what her foster mom dubbed 'the cave' - a crate at the end of a short hallway. Beanie immediately claimed the cave as her safe place, and she rarely left without being carried or persuaded with super tasty treats. Beanie has adjusted nicely to the daily routine, but still occasionally appreciates the serenity of her cave ... (Read More)when the household is bustling. We were told that Beanie's former owner kept her penned up outside, so the inside of a home is new to her, and she can be startled by new things. In fact, she'd prefer that her foster mom not clutter the floor with anything that doesn't normally belong there - grocery bags, step stools, laundry baskets, etc. She loves sniffing around outdoors in the fenced yard, playing with the resident beagles, raiding the recycle bin, and the tasty treats that her mom doles out from the vegetable garden, especially fresh green beans! Beanie craves affection and quickly warms up to strangers, especially if they sit on the floor and pet her a lot. In a home with a couple of people to dote on her, Beanie will surely blossom into a bigger love bug than she already is. As is the case with shy dogs, Beanie should be supervised while outside, especially in a new environment and even in a securely fenced yard. Beanie's leash training is going better than expected, especially when accompanied by another dog. She's made excellent progress on house-training and she's learning some basic commands (e.g., sit, come, crate). All are works in progress, plus she's a gem in the crate. Beanie is vocal only when sights and sounds startle her while outdoors. Beanie's ideal home would include a patient adult or two (she is untested with children) committed to helping her through a short-term withdrawal in a new environment, continued leash and obedience training, lots of love and affection, another confident, friendly, and playful dog, a securely fenced yard, and a crate. When playing in her foster home, Beanie initiates play and unaggressively holds her own with one of the resident dogs who sometimes turns into a jerk during doggie games! She loves to run zoomies in the yard, and when she's really excited for meals, she'll bounce around and gleefully jump into and out of her crate. (Less)

Notes from Harmony's foster mom after her first night: I wanted to let you know that Harmony had a good night. She was great with her bath and she was welcomed by my girls. She even slept with 2 of them last night. She loves my husband and son and is now wagging her tail. She is good with kids and even played with my granddaughters last night. She has not had an accident in the house. She follows the other dogs when they have to go out. She is still very shy and fearful of noises.

Beagle    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Sweetie has a wonderful disposition. She plays nicely with the resident dogs, is very gentle around puppies, and seems indifferent to the cat. Dumped by her previous owner, we think she had it pretty rough until a Good Samaritan found her. Likely an outdoor dog her entire life, Sweetie was emaciated, full of ticks, and tested positive for Lyme and Erlichia. She also seems to have a mild hearing loss. Now that she has completed an antibiotic treatment, has had a dental and extractions for her many broken teeth, has been spayed, and and has gained some weight, Sweetie is ready to find a loving home. She does not mind being crated and has ... (Read More)not had an accident in the house for quite some time. Could you be the answer to her prayers? (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-11-07-00409Azura (female)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Azura weighs 23 pounds and is around four years old. She is a loving, people-bonded, beautiful girl, and has been a devoted mother to her large litter of puppies. Azura joined our rescue from a local Maryland shelter. The volunteer who went to assess and pick up dogs that day had no plans to take home a heavily pregnant dog, but her time was up and, unwilling to leave Azura to her fate, loaded up the car with the expectant mom and a handful of other lucky hounds. Azura settled in easily in her foster home and gave birth a week later. We weren't expecting such a large litter, so the event was quite exciting! Azura is very, very submissive ... (Read More)toward humans. She loves to be petted and paid attention to, but she approaches low to the ground with her head down. We have to assume that her experiences with humans in the past were not great. However, her love of people is undiminished. She loves men, women, even boisterous children and will let anyone handle her puppies. She does bay at voices on the television and at strangers outside the house. Once people introduce themselves, she is happy to meet them. She loves chew toys and will howl and growl to defend them from other dogs. Azura has done very well with house training, although if she is left with unsupervised free run of the house, she will have accidents. If confined to the kitchen or if a human is home to let her out, she does well. With a refresher course on house-training in her new home, Azura will make a wonderful forever pet! She will be available for adoption once her puppies are weaned and she is spayed. (Less)

This beautiful girl came to us in the winter of 2008. We initially named her Trinity, and she didn't linger long before she found herself a loving home. All was well until Trinity's (now Peanut's) human developed serious health concerns and is no longer able to care for her. Peanut has so much to offer the humans who open their hearts and home to her. She gained lots of valuable experience at navigating indoor living. She is crate trained and housebroken (though ANY dog in a new situation is prone to accidents). She knows a few tricks, knows how to offer solace after a bad day, and never shows up late for a meal. Peanut and her current ... (Read More)human are going to be very sad when they have to part, and Peanut would like someone who is extra-understanding while she adjusts to life without her mom. Peanut loves to play with people or other dogs. She enjoys walks and outdoor activities in general. If you throw a stick, she loves to show you how fast she can run. She loves to snuggle in bed and on the sofa and likes to lay with her head on your chest. Peanut is a very good girl, even during baths (which she seems to enjoy), although care must be taken not to get water in her ears as she is prone to ear infections. He is currently making his home in Baltimore City with two older resident beagles and is extremely social and docile. He is very gentle with his human preschoolers and provides lots of kisses. Henry loves attention and is not shy about making his needs known He will jump on his foster mom's lap if he feels her attention has strayed. He is crate-trained and it seems as if he has had some love in his life. As we learn more about Henry, we will update this post.

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Elsa is shy at first, but it doesn't take long for her to approach with her tail wagging, asking for a chin scratch. She appears to be house-trained and gets along with other dogs. She definitely thinks the couch is the best place to be. Elsa and two other beagles were abandoned in the snow at a landfill in Virginia. All three were rescued and are in search of a loving home, preferably with central heat. Stay tuned for a better photo.

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet Freckles P George II, a fellow of indeterminate age. His former family said he is 3 years old; the shelter said he is 7. Either way, he is a sweet, happy guy who was dumped by his owner, who then stole his family's rent money and truck and drove out of Freckle's life forever. Freckles has a growth blocking the entrance of his left ear. It is currently being treated with antibiotics, but the vet is recommending removal. All that aside, this is a friendly, happy, beagle boy. He sure didn't deserve his first owner. We're sure he can do better..

This cute little girl came to us from Maryland's Eastern Shore. She landed in a shelter after being hit by a car. The shelter recognized that her chances for adoption were slim, even though her personality was stellar. So, here she is...heartworm positive, Lyme positive...AND because that's not enough, the impact of being struck by a car dislocated/separated her shoulder. After she has recovered from the orthopedic surgery, recovered from heartworm and Lyme, and recovered from her spay, she'll be available for adoption. We will post an update at that time.

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Doodah and her friend Zippy didn't have much of a life, but they had each other and that was enough . . . until the day they found themselves dumped in a high-kill shelter. Things were looking pretty bleak, but these two were so loving that the shelter workers worked extra hard to find a rescue that would take both. Fortunately, some kind and generous souls decided that they had room for two. By all accounts, both dogs are sweet and calm. They have been through far too much in life to separate them now, so together they will stay. Please refer to our posting of Doodah's friend Zippy. What a couple of love muffins!

Rescue Me ID: 13-01-29-00060Bonnie (female)

Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Bronx is on the quiet side, and quite affectionate. She's curious in that beagley way...sniff sniff here, sniff sniff there, here a sniff, there a sniff. You know how it goes. Of course, her sniffer works overtime because she doesn't get out of the crate much. There's not much left to sniff in there, so when she gets out in the yard for a potty break, she takes advantage of it. Right now Bronx is stuck at the vet while she awaits foster and/or adoption. Bronx has what is known as a 'cherry eye.' We are looking into having it repaired.

Peyton is here and she needs a foster home! She's friendly and squiggly and much too busy to pose for a photo. She is good with other dogs. She's a little 'fluffy' for her height and health, but that's an easy fix! More information regarding Peyton will be forthcoming.

Beagle    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Heartworm Positive

Scruff is a handsome, very nice, and very grateful senior boy. Scruff came to us mid-December. Not that many older dogs walk out of the shelter, but Scruff was charming and our volunteer fell in love with him. Scruff is heartworm positive and has begun treatment. He's tolerating it well. His foster mom says he's a real sweetheart - quiet, not vocal, and content to be in the same room as his human. There are other dogs in the home and Scruff gets along well with them. He's past the enthusiastic games of fetch with the kids, so would probably be best in a quieter home. This boy really knows how to rock a nap!

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bandit is a beautiful little guy with red ticking and Cleopatra eyes. He has been completely vetted and his diabetes evaluated. He is on special diabetic food and insulin, so he needs to go to a home where his medical needs will not be neglected. He is a jealous lovebug. He prefers to have all the attention in the home. He sits at his foster mom's feet or gets up on the couch with her for his favorite thing - petting. He at one time had a broken tail but it was long healed when he came into rescue. His crooked little tail gives him character. He gets along with all of his fellow foster dogs but would like to share his human with fewer dogs. ... (Read More)His ideal home environment would be an adult home with no children or older children. He loves the outdoors and sitting in the sun so a fence would be a plus. Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Willis was picked up by a good Samaritan and taken to the shelter. He is temporarily being fostered in Arlington, VA, but needs to find a more permanent situation as three dogs is too much for his single dad to handle. We received this report from his foster dad on 2/19/12: Willis is a wonderful dog! He really does have potential. He liked Tommy and Paddy [the resident beagles] from the start and follows them everywhere. He walks well on a leash and has terrific energy. The boys have scared up two rabbits so far. To hear all three going off is a treat! His appetite is good, but a little odd. He favors chicken, but doesn't know what to do ... (Read More)with lamb. The household is an exciting time at dinner. Tommy barks and Willis sometimes walks around the kitchen on his hind legs. There is no aggression with this one, even if food is involved. He is responding to my touch and has sought me out to be rubbed. He's still shy, but I've been using the 'group'sessions to reach out and give him some attention. He now wags his tale a bit. He'd make a great wing-man for another dog. He loves all dogs, big or small. Willis thrives on going for walks. He absolutely loves it. Any fencing needs to be secure with this guy. He can shrink down and get through some pretty small spaces. Willis is a 'dog's dog' and will be placed only in a home with other dogs. (Less)

3-4 years old, Luna is a pup at heart. She's a playful girl with the energy to keep up with an active family. She adores human attention, basking in any affection that comes her way. She is not above chewing on inappropriate items, so she would appreciate a home that will keep her supplied with chew toys. Luna is crated during the day while her foster mom works. She walks pretty well on a leash. Adoptive Status: Spayed, UTD on shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Beagle Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

Yankee is a very active playful fellow. He loves both people and dogs, and interacts well with both. Although he was born to a beagle mix mother in our rescue (Wrigley), his dad was obviously a black Labrador. He is very handsome with a soft, sleek black coat highlighted by white patches on his chest, toes and lips. He is energetic as only young dogs can be, and plays well with his foster brothers. He enjoys running around the backyard and then settling on his pillow in his foster's bedroom for the night. Yankee has great manners, is crate trained, walks well on a leash, sits on command and comes when called. He is patient at meal time and ... (Read More)waits his turn when treats are being handed out. In general he is a well behaved dog with manners. He was raised in a loving home, but was returned to our rescue for medical reasons. Yankee does have a chronic condition that requires continued care, and for that reason Yankee is eligible for Beagle Maryland's Friends of Winston Program. In general Yankee does not act like he is feeling badly. He races out the back door, talks to the dogs a couple of yards over, tells us when folks are passing the house with or without dogs, and plays wholeheartedly with his brothers. He is a sweet and loving guy that just needs a little extra helping hand to live a comfortable and active lifestyle as your best friend. Adoptive Status: Neutered, UTD on shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Dream Home Minimum Requirements: Obviously, Yankee needs someone who will be attentive to his medical needs throughout the rest of his life. Owner Aptitude Level: Nurturing, patient beginner (Less)

Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Mrs. Beasley is a lady! She's one that would sip tea with her pinky in the air. Mrs. Beasley was simply not brought up to roughhouse or participate in the juvenile shenanigans of those other hooligans in her foster home. In fact, she is aghast at the very idea. Really. Mrs. Beasley would probably be most comfortable in a home where the children and adults are calm and gentle, as she is calm and gentle herself. She is a very, very nice girl.

This beautiful little girl is an absolute sweetheart. Lively, but gentle and curious, she is happy to be out of that terrifying shelter and into the relative calm of a foster home. She loves to get out in the yard where the smells are so enticing. Bianca is very friendly. Her tail goes a mile a minute when she's shown some friendly attention. PIease Read Before Adopting a Beagle in Maryland
Beagle Dogs can make good pets in Maryland if they match your IifestyIe. Beagles are small, energetic hounds with sweet, happy dispositions. Beagles make wonderful family pets. Beagles need to be with people and do not like to be left alone; it is a good idea to have more than one dog if you will be away often. Beagles are great with children but do not do well with cats and other household animals unless they are around them from the time they are puppies. A Beagle needs a decent sized yard to play in and needs lots of exercise. Beagles may wander off easily if not kept on a leash.
