Jolene is a beautiful beagle. She is 8 years old. She loves other dogs and cats, although sometimes she will chase cats. She has shown a little bit of food aggression but with work we have overcome that, I put it here because being in a new environment might bring up the behavior again. She is living with cushing's disease which is completely manageable with one pill a day and nutrition management (high protein, no grain). Since Jolene is a beagle it is highly recommended you walk her on a leash, she will take off running if not on a leash. Other than her quirks she is an absolutely amazing dog. Loving and happy. I Will REALLY LOVE YOU! Zoe was born about November 15, 2007 and weighs about 18 pounds. Zoe isn't perfect, she came into us extremely frightened of us and everything here. Which we realize can be a lot to deal with but most dogs thrive with all the fun. It took Zoe awhile to decide to love us, but once she did she REALLY loves us and is a wonderful lap warmer and the temperature outside doesn't really matter, she will warm you anyway. Perhaps her adjustment problem was so bad as she couldn't believe her humans dumped her at a shelter! We feel strongly that Zoe will need some adjustment time and understanding to adjust to one more home ... (Read More)which we all hope will be her forever home. Zoe did receive a ton of medical care from her previous owner because, well....Zoe also has seizures. She has been here a year now and we've only seen one. It wasn't the lightest seizure we've seen and it wasn't the worse we've seen. It lasted about 3 minutes total and she was fully recovered by the next morning. Zoe did come with meds, but since she was so freaked out on arrival and there are 8 acres here for her to run from us she didn't get the meds for quite some time and now she loves us we don't feel the meds are all that necessary. You and your vet may disagree and decide to put her back on what she was taking and there are good medical notes to assist. Zoe is happy, social, and loves it here now, but she truly does deserve a real home again where there will always be her own human lap available. We rescued Butter and his brother Jelly from a rural town in Alabama. They were found completely hairless due to scartopic mange, and were emaciated. We are not sure where they came from, besides knowing it was a terrible situation. Both boys have healed wonderfully, and don't even look like the same dogs anymore! His only issue is that -like most beagles- he follows his nose and can eat anything left behind! So we are carefull with closing the trash cabinet and everything on the street while walking him. 'm a Velcro Dog! Jenny was born about January 10, 2015 and may top out in the 35 lb. range. She is a tall, lanky, girl and a gorgeous mix of brown and black. Jenny has settled in and decided she really does love all us new humans, but we need to caution that she may need some warm up time at first. Oh My, It's Chilly Up Here!!!! Rusty was born March 15, 2010 and will probably weigh about 40 lbs. This cute little guy made his way up from North Carolina with Thanksgiving visitors that live in this area, they wanted to save him from the high kill pound in that area. Oh, my, that was a long trip! Ellie was born about November 25, 2009 and weighs about 17 lbs. She is an adorable, delicate looking, little tri-colored girl that is just wonderful with the other dogs here. She travels well in a car and good thing since her human brought her here from CT ! The phone rings and there is a woman rather upset because she can't keep her dog and she's very angry with all the shelters she's called because 'they were turning their backs on her dog'. I listened for awhile longer and then said 'fine, you can bring her here'. Of course not thinking she really would! Several days later she called to say she'd be here the next day and I was still surprised when she showed up! OK, so back to the Ellie: She's good in the car (good thing!) and she is good in the house. She is a quiet little girl, just hangs out on the top of the couch most of the day and in our laps in the evening. She does take some warm up time and a home where there are just one or two humans and not a ton of company would be best, she's just reserved with those she doesn't know and can be nippy if cornered or frightened. We are told she has some leash aggression, meaning she thinks she's a tough dog when out in the world and on leash. We've not seen this, but haven't had her on leash. So, all in all, she isn't a perfect dog, but she will be well loved again in the right home. Ellie was hit by a car when she was a year old and we have a copy of her records which couldn't be read due to the handwriting, but the vet office was nice enough to have the vet translate that the trauma Ellie experienced was an avulsion fracture of the femoral head and a right luxated hip. They popped the hip back in and due to her young age the fracture was able to heal on it's own. A few weeks later there were no signs of any discomfort and there will be no issues long term. Meet Barney! The first thing everyone notices about Barney is how goofy and adorable he is. He has the best qualities of a Beagle and a Bulldog, creating one perfect little nugget! There is nothing quite as uplifting as being created by this energetic boy, a toy in his mouth and a tail wagging so hard it makes his whole body wiggle. Unfortunately, Barney wasn't always the handsome and obedient dog he is today. Barney was purchased from a pet store as an expensive 'hybrid' Beabull dog to a family with several young toddlers. Because he was so stubborn, his family let him get away with everything, instead of training him, and his behavioral problems became worse and worse until his family had to surrender him to our shelter at 10 months old. Almost 2 years later, Barney is unrecognizable from that puppy that was surrendered to our shelter. He is incredibly well mannered in the right hands. He has learned basic and advanced obedience training in addition to learning agility training and how to play appropriately with other dogs. Loretta Lynn was born about June 10, 2005 and weighs in the 40 lb. range. Eight is the new five for this country singer as she hitched a ride with one of our volunteers that was in Nashville for a festival and decided not to waste the trip without saving a life or two. We found a dog control officer that had a few dogs that were hours away from death and he just hated to because they were such friendly dogs. Loretta was saved by one quick phone call! (Read More)at the pound because, well, she's a beagle and if you don't contain a Beagle with a fence or keep them on leash they will wander off. They don't mean to, they just can't help but follow their noses, it's what they were bred to do. So, we can't imagine how unloved she must have felt when the people in this world that professed to love her forever when she was that cute puppy told dog control to keep her, they couldn't be bothered. By the way, she ducks when we clip a leash to her collar. She is telling us that wherever she was, it wasn't a very nice place. Beagle Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. Beagles are small, energetic hounds with sweet, happy dispositions. Beagles make wonderful family pets. Beagles need to be with people and do not like to be left alone; it is a good idea to have more than one dog if you will be away often. Beagles are great with children but do not do well with cats and other household animals unless they are around them from the time they are puppies. A Beagle needs a decent sized yard to play in and needs lots of exercise. Beagles may wander off easily if not kept on a leash.
