Puppies in shelters are sad enough, but senior pets have to be the MOST heart breaking of all shelter pets. Bell is a sweet senior baby whose sad brown eyes tell her whole story. She was originally at a high kill shelter where she was going to be put to sleep. We heard about her and thought she deserved a second chance! We don't know exactly how old Bell is, but looking at her body condition and teeth we're guessing at least 10. She is very mild mannered and docile and seems to like all the other dogs and people she's met here! She looks like she's had multiple litters of puppies, but now it's HER turn to be someone's baby! URGENT, RESCUE ONLY ~ Waynesboro, PA ~ Kendall ~ 5 year old male basset/beagle mix, neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations. Bite quarantine is up Sunday, March 16, 2014. Need immediate rescue commitment! Kendall came to Antietam Humane Society as a stray 2/4/14. This fearful dog is not adjusting well to shelter life. He guards his kennel & is uncomfortable with attention from those who approach. Kendall does much better with people once he's outside of his kennel. He's often calm & sweet around staff & volunteers, however, his temperament is unpredictable. He has fear-aggression issues, but he also craves affection and attention once ... (Read More)he feels comfortable with someone. Kendall recently did well during a meet-and-greet with a prospective adopter. He needs placement with someone who can help him with his fears and anxieties. There should be no young children in his foster home. Kendall's fears & aggressive tendencies are calmed when he is with other dogs, although care must be taken at feeding time as he's exhibited some food aggression. Kendall is currently quarantined due to a bite incident on 3/6/14. A shelter volunteer entered his kennel, planning to take him for a walk. He was frightened and bit the volunteer on the arm. No medical attention was sought by the volunteer. PLEASE, If anyone can help, contact Andrea Haugh at Antietam Humane Society. Beagle    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats
Personality: Low Energy
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Lyra...(pronounced LIE-rah)...is one of our When you wish upon a star... Lab to Leash retirees! This tiny (15 lb) 1 year old female is about as adorable as they come. She snuggles into you and would love to be held all day. She is like a little ragdoll! Lyra is cratetrained, as is working on her housetraining. She loves everyone she meets, including the cat! Dogs, however, well, she is generally OK with other dogs, but does get overstimulated at times and we would recommend she be an only dog. She deserves and would love to be the only dog in the house so she can get all the attention possible!! We have been working with Lyra since ... (Read More)mid-January to clear up some GI issues. After many tests and medications, she has been diagnosed with SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) and we are moving forward with treatment. She is on an antibiotic, B12 injections, probiotics and a fiber pill, and while she is eating boiled chicken and potatoes right now, we are going to try to transition her to a prescription food specifically for this condition. Lyra does NOT have EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency) which is often the cause of SIBO. Right now, we do not know the cause. It can be idiopathic in many dogs which just means that the cause is never known. We may be able to treat her for this condition and it will resolve, and she will be fine. There is the possibility, however, that this could be a lifelong condition for her. At this time, we just do not know. We are taking one day at a time and treating her in collaboration with our veterinarians. Socially and behaviorally, Lyra is about as typical as any 1 year old beagle, although she is actually probably a bit calmer than most! She will find shoes and other fun things to chew on if you are not paying attention! Her adopter will need to monitor and work the SIBO, which again, could be lifelong, but may not be. We will know more as the weeks progress, but we sure hope this does not hold back an interested adopter. This is one special girl who deserves to start her new life with her forever family!     Meet Dasher. Isn't he dashing? He was pulled from a high kill rural shelter in KY a few days before he was to be killed. He is a bit shy but oh so sweet and handsome. Dasher was found in a typical dump spot for beagles and hounds when they are no longer wanted. What a shame. Can you help us find Dasher a new home for the new year? He is set to be vetted this week so he will be all set to go. He is currently in foster in Beaver Dam KY but don't let that stop you we can arrange transport. If you are interested in Dasher please email us at angelbeagleandhoundrescue@yahoo.com.

He is a bit shy but warms up to you nicely. Caleb wants a place to lay his head where he won't have to ever worry again about anything. Can you help Caleb? He will be neutered before he goes to his adoptive home. If you are interested in Caleb please email us at angelbeagleandhoundrescue@yahoo.com.

Animal ID: BRL 400Gilbert (male)

Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Gilbert has arrived! He was retired from a veterinary program where he helped train our newest technicians, veterinarians, and other animal lovers. Now he is looking for the retirement he deserves as a loved and spoiled housepet! :) Gilbert here, otherwise known as Gilly, Gibby or Gillyweed (for all you Harry Potter fans), and I'm coming to you LIVE to ask for a happy home! I'm a comedic and charismatic little guy who is full to the brim with personality! I have this soft, soulful expression that really melts hearts, and my sweet nature wins me lots of friends. In fact, I tend to get anxious when I'm alone or when I experience a scary ... (Read More)change in my environment. I am very grateful when people take the time to just sit with me and reassure me that it's ok to relax - these moments are my favorites because I think that's when people see the true loving spirit that I have within me. I hope that I can find a family that can spend lots of time with me and has another smaller, confident dog (and a fenced in yard) that could help me learn the ropes of living in a home. (It is OK if you have cats, too - so long as you at least have another young dog for me to play with!) I know that I can learn fast when I feel included and loved - I am very bright and pretty bold at heart! I am great at figuring out treat-dispensing toys and I'm a whiz at clicker training - you should see how beautifully I can walk on leash when I am getting rewarded and praised frequently! I am energetic and love to zoom around the play yard. I am cratetrained (although I do not love my crate), and I am still working on housetraining, but doing very well! I just know that there are so many happy experiences waiting for me out in the world, and I curl up in my bed every night dreaming of the family that will show them all to me. Beagle    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Eeyore has arrived! He was retired from a veterinary program where he helped train our newest technicians, veterinarians, and other animal lovers. Now he is looking for the retirement he deserves as a loved and spoiled housepet! :) I'm going to be honest and tell you that my name is Eeyore because people used to see me as a gloomy kind of guy. Just a few months ago, that may have been true - I didn't really know what to expect of my new life and I wasn't sure I would like it. I am still a little unsure in new environments and with new people, but if you give me some time and love, you will get to see the big heart I have to share with you I ... (Read More)am cratetrained (although I do not like my crate) and am working on my housetraining. Although I like to play with other dogs in the yard, I would really prefer to be an only dog because living with other dogs 24/7 can get on my nerves a little bit. Cats are OK. I would love a calmer home, maybe with older children, or even no children at all would be OK. I just need a family that will be patient with me and not overwhelm me. I I like to think about things carefully before I file them away in my mind because even the smallest things deserve genuine appreciation. Now that my gloomy days are behind me, I am still a little nervous of what is to come - but everyone who knows me says that my little rays of sunshine are going to touch the life of a Very Special Someone and I will have sent those pesky rainclouds away for good!     Whoa Nellie!! This dog is c-u-t-e! At approximately 5-6 years old, this little dog has lots of miles left. Altered, up to date on all of her shots, Nellie is definitely a sweet girl looking for someone to give her (and get back) hugs and plenty of kisses. We are seeking a quieter, stable home for Nellie without other dogs because she can be intimated by large breeds. Nellie is microchipped, does well on lead and is also crate trained and housetrained to a schedule. Animal ID: BRL-0264Benny (male)

Beagle    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Benny is a handsome, young, active, and affectionate beagle boy. He is so typical that he has some common beagle puppy traits...being mouthy when he plays, chewing on the occasional inappropriate items, etc. Benny loves to play and he loves to snuggle. :) He is house- and crate-trained and will willingly spend quiet time in his crate, even when his human family is home. In addition to playing, Benny enjoys his snuggle time and will usually just melt for a belly- and or ear-rub, although if he is feeling playful he will try to turn it into a game. He will also bring a rope or other toy to initiate a game of tug when he is feeling playful, ... (Read More)too. To date Benny has had little interest in the resident cats, and he has gotten along well with dogs of all ages and sizes. He would do well as an only dog as well provided his adopters insure that he gets enough exercise! The biggest difference between Benny and a typical beagle (if there is such a thing) is that he MUST sleep crated. Benny has a sleep-disorder called RBD (REM-Sleep Behavior Disorder) that causes him to have episodes where he snaps, growls and lunges and anybody (or any dog) in the vicinity may be in his way at this time and end up being bitten. Benny is NOT AWAKE during these episodes (despite what it looks like) and THIS IS NOT A BEHAVIORAL OR TRAINING PROBLEM!! He is not awake and does not have conscious control during these episodes - he is truly asleep. If awoken during an incident, Benny will simply look around, curl back up and go right back to sleep. In his foster home he usually has one or two episodes a night, although he has had more some nights, usually following excessive stimulation. This is quite manageable in a vigilant household. You just need to make sure that Benny sleeps in a crate! :) To learn more about Benny's sleep disorder, please visit the webpage of another dog with this disorder http://www.withoutavoice.net/Sam.html To review our adoption process and submit an application, please visit: beaglerescueleague.org/adoption (Less)

I am such a handsome beagle....everybody thinks so...muscular, active, and ready to snuggle on the couch whenever you are! I am 8 years old and am a LTL (Lab to Leash) retiree. I get a little nervous and anxious sometimes, so would really do best in a calmer home. I prefer hanging out with women, but if you are the right, patient man, I'll love you, too! I am handsome enough to be a little conceited, but confidence is one thing I need a little work with! I would really love to live with beagle experienced adopters who have a fenced in yard and would be patient with me as I adjust to a new home. It will need to be a fairly local family that ... (Read More)will be able to accommodate several meetings with me prior to adoption. This is very important because I have been with my foster family for a very long time and will need to meet with my new family several times before going home with them. I am cratetrained and mostly housetrained, and while I love to play with other dogs, I would be happiest as an only dog in a home - but maybe with some playdates with other dogs! I am OK with cats. I might chase them every once in a while, but in general., I think they're OK. Young kids are a little too active for me, and make me nervous, so I would do best in a home with all adults. I can sometimes be vocal, so an apartment or condo would NOT work for me. I have been looking for a home for a while now, and would really like to finally find my forever home! Could it be with you? Beagle    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bab is looking for a very special home. At seven years old he had lived within a laboratory research facility until he was rescued by BRL. His foster mom reports that Bab has made tremendous strides since his release date. Bab is house trained to a schedule and has learned to use a doggie door as well. He is comfortable sleeping in his crate at night (or just for short cat naps!). He gets along very well with the 3 other dogs in his foster home but could adjust nicely as an only dog. Bab will need to find a very patient owner who understands that he is a reactive dog - lots of things are a sensory overload for him (sudden movement, loud ... (Read More)noises, strangers). Because of that we are recommending no small children. He has not lived with cats so to be extra safe a cat free home is probably best. Bab is a smaller sized beagle with a gentle personality. With proper handling and a good understanding of how to live happily with a fearful dog, we're confident that Bab's progress will continue until he finds a home of his own. PIease Read Before Adopting a Beagle in Pennsylvania
Beagle Dogs can make good pets in Pennsylvania if they match your IifestyIe. Beagles are small, energetic hounds with sweet, happy dispositions. Beagles make wonderful family pets. Beagles need to be with people and do not like to be left alone; it is a good idea to have more than one dog if you will be away often. Beagles are great with children but do not do well with cats and other household animals unless they are around them from the time they are puppies. A Beagle needs a decent sized yard to play in and needs lots of exercise. Beagles may wander off easily if not kept on a leash.
